Rudolf von Alt

Rudolf von Alt - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Vienna 1812-1905) An interior in Rosenberg Castle, an estate of the counts Bouquoy-Longueval in southern Bohemia, signed and dated R. v. Alt (1)856, watercolor on paper, 32 x 46 cm, mounted, framed, considerably browned, (Hu)

Literature: Walter Koschatzky, Rudolf von Alt, Salzburg 1976, 56/06 or 56/07; Maria Luise Sternath, Rudolf von Alt, Exhibition Albertina, Vienna 2005, p. 218.

From a series of views which Alt made from 1856 to1858: “A few years earlier Alt was asked to come to the estate of the comital family Longueval-Bonquoy in Bohemian Rosenberg. He was to follow his recommendation as an architecture painter and “Zimmermaler”. He came to the fortress after it had been extended by Johann Georg von Buquoy between 1840 and 1857 in order to paint a large series of vedutas, including 30 interiors and five exterior views. The commission took him from 1853 to 1858 and was particularly rewarding for him, because Alt could neither evade the splendour of his patron’s lifestyle with “ancient furniture, precious weapons, vessels and jugs” that manifested itself in a Neogothic taste, nor could Alt withdraw from the majestic location of the estate above the town and the river Moldau.”
