Thomas Ender was born in Vienna and was the son of the dawdler Johann Ender. He was the twin brother of the history painter Johann Nepomuk Ender. In 1806 Thomas and his brother entered the Vienna Academy. There they studied history painting with Hubert Maurer. In 1810 Thomas Ender changed to the landscape class of Laurenz Janscha. After Janscha’s death, Joseph Mößmer became Ender‘s teacher. After several study trips Ender was awarded the Große Malerpreis (Grand Painter’s Prize). Count Clemens Metternich acquired the awarded painting and promoted the artist. In 1817 Ender took part in the Austrian expedition to Brazil, afterwards he went to Rome. From 1823 onwards Ender was active in the Salzkammergut by order of Metternich; in 1826 he made a study trip to Paris. In 1828 he was appointed “Kammermaler” by Archduke Johann and participated in the archduke’s voyages to Southern Russia and to the orient. Ender was professor at the Academy from 1837 to 1851. From 1855 to 1857 he once again travelled to Italy.
