(Moneglia 1527-1585 Madrid) Venus and Cupid, c. 1550, pen and brown ink, on laid paper, framing lines in pen and black ink, inscribed "26 Venere in piedi appogiata a una colonna e Cupidi in terra" on the reverse, 40,2 x 28,2 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance: Kate Ganz Gallery, New York;
Private collection, Belgium.

The attribution to Luca Cambiaso was confirmed by Prof. Jonathan Bober and Dr. Mary Newcome Schleier on the basis of a photograph.

Luca Cambiaso was born in Moneglia, a small town near Genova in 1527, where he was an apprentice of his father Giovanni. Soon he became acquainted with the style of Perino del Vaga who had left Rome for Genova after the Sacco di Roma. In Genova he exercised a considerable influence on the following local generations of Mannerists in Northern Italy. Cambiaso’s predilection for the bizarre geometrical abstraction of forms becomes particularly evident in the artist’s drawings and sketches. The present study may have been executed around 1550 according to stylistic characteristics.
