The four engrvings derive from a fencing manual "Academie de l'Espée" which was published by Girard Thibault in Antwerp in 1628. It is a richly illustrated fencing book, which is considered to be the most comprehensive of its kind. The preparations of the engravings took several years. The manual was completed with the support of sixteen engravers. Thibaults fencing academy is based on techniques of the Spanish school "La Verdadera Destrezza" from whose principles he developped complicated geometrical figures such as the "Cercle mysterieux“.
