Joos de Momper and Jan Breughel II

Joos de Momper and Jan Breughel II - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1564–1635) and (Antwerp 1601–1678)
A wide mountain landscape with red deer
oil on canvas, 67.5 x 86.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution (written communication, February 2015).
The present painting is an important addition to the known body of joint works produced by Antwerp artists during the first half of the 17th century, as a collaboration between Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel II. From a slightly raised vantage point, which is, as Ertz remarks, nevertheless far removed from the perspective of ‘world landscapes’ of earlier Flemish landscapes, it is possible to be hold a scene populated by stags and roes.

This highly detailed and narrative composition is set on a landscape stage painted by Momper, who succeeded in combining the landscape approach of the late Mannerist panorama with a more contemporary landscape style anticipating compositions of the latter half of the century. Ertz compares the present painting with other works dating from around 1620.
