Later model of the 2nd series with disc brakes & overdrive!

In 1958 Ferrari presented its newest model Gran Turismo in Paris: the 250 GT Pininfarina coupé. The earlier 250 Europa, also built by Pininfarina, as well as the models from the Boano and Ellena workshops, even the ones in serial production, were built in what can at best be referred to as a ‘homeopathic’ number of units. With the new model production became somewhat more serial. Pininfarina had expanded its production capacity considerably, so that Ferrari was in a position to look forward to financially more stable times, subject to demand. The new model had a longer wheelbase of 2.600 mm and was given straightforward and modern bodywork of timeless elegance by Pininfarina. The engine at first remained the well-known Tipo 128 D, later replaced by the Tipo 128 F engine. In addition, second series 250 GTs were equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels and a transmission with Laycock overdrive, which makes them the most sought after examples today. By 1960 a total of 351 units of this beautiful coupés had been produced, including the prototype.

According to the Ferrari historian, Marcel Massini, the present unit, bearing the chassis number 1989GT, was delivered to the Carrozzeria Pininfarina (order number 29492) on 14 May 1960. On 5 August, the finished Ferrari of ‘Grigio Argento’ colour and upholstered in beige Connolly leather left the assembly plant and was subsequently sold to its first owner, Lionello Bodici from Padua. In 1963 the Ferrari went to Liugi Chinetti Motors in New York. In March 1970 the newsletter of the Ferrari Owners’ Club USA listed its owner as Robert C. Huntley of Los Angeles. During the early 90ies, like many of its kind, went to Japan, but returned to California, to the Symbolic Motor Car Company, in August 2002. In October of the same year the 1989GT became part of a tax-friendly transaction with Lawrence Slattery of Knoxville, Tennessee, who sold his Ferrari 375 MM to Symbolic. In 2004, Symbolic Motor Cars bought the car back and put it into storage until 2011, at which time it was sold to its current owner in Germany. After its arrival, the new owner had the car completely restored in a reliable car repair shop.
The Ferrari was taken apart entirely, the bodywork stripped down, and given a new coat in the original colour. All mechanical parts including the original engine were reconditioned and overhauled; only the interior that had previously been restored in black, was reinstalled. An extensive photo documentary demonstrates the scope and, more importantly, the quality of the work carried out. All this resulted in a particularly fine example of an early Ferrari Gran Turismo of the legendary 250 series - which would be an asset to any collection in the world!
