Josef Willroider

Josef Willroider - 19th Century Paintings

(Villach 1838–1915 Munich)
Large Landscape with Washerwoman, signed, dated and inscribed J. Willroider Ddf 1874, oil on canvas, 103 x 152 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance:
German private property.

Josef Willroider moved to Düsseldorf in 1866. It is not clear why he moved here, perhaps it was the reputation of the Düsseldorf Academy at which, unlike in Munich, landscape painting played an important role. With their colourful depictions of southern and northern landscapes, Oswald and Andreas Achenbach exercised a strong influence on Willroider. Josef Willroider’s works were regularly shown at exhibitions together with the Malkasten association of artists which was established in 1848. Here the more progressive Düsseldorf landscape painters gathered together, officially separating themselves from the academic tradition to follow the French style of en plein air painting which was popular at that time.
