Gustave Adolphe Grau was a pupil of Leon Bonnat (1833–1922) and Albert Maignan (1845–1908). As well as historical subjects he also painted portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. Gustave Geoffroy, the French critic and founding member of the Goncourt Academy, wrote in his 1905 Cahiers d’Art et de Littérature:.....has a special talent.....and a keen sense of the life of a crowd.....the light is dispersed with precision over the lively groups. Crowds have their own appeal... one which is very difficult to reproduce....Mr Grau does this splendidly.” Grau exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon (1903, 1904 and 1905).
