Gustave Surand studied under Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) in Paris. His travels to Tunisia in 1884 provided him with the opportunity to study animals in their natural habitat. Upon his return he specialized in wild animal motifs. In the present lot he meticulously portrays a lion at rest on a rock in a landscape. Lions and tigers were his favorite subjects.
