Italy, early 19th century

Italy, early 19th century - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

16 views of naples and surrounding: Napoli da Mare, Posilipo, Carmine, Capodimonte, Castellamare, Grotta di Pozzuoli, the temple of Paestum, Isola d'Ischia, Capri, Procida etc., gouache on paper, all on one sheet 32 x 47 cm, singular motifs each 7 x 10 cm, framed, (Hu)

In the Renaissance Italy was the center of cultural renewal. Well into the 19th century artists preferred to travel there. They embarked on their trips to Italy in order to study the classical antiquities and to get an impression of the original sites. They rather travelled to Italy than to Greece, which was then under Ottoman rule and therefore very difficult to be travelled around. Goethe, the author of the travel report “Italian journey”, set the trend with his words: “In this country one must become an artist”. Italy inspired many artists who in turn enhanced the art world. They gave landscape painting a fundamentally new impact by either sometimes creating ideal landscapes or occasionally depicting topographical precise ones.
