The present engraving comes from the opulently illustrated tome comprising five volumes "Imagines Gentis Austriacae" by Francesco Terzio. The book contained numerous illustrations of members of the House of Austria. It was commissioned under the patronage of Archduke Ferdinand II. The complete edition comprised 58 sheets with 74 engraved portraits of princes of the Habsburg family, including their spouses, their near relatives and real and mystic ancestors. The volumes did not follow a chronological order. Each one contained a coherent series of portraits, which was dedicated to a particular prince of the House of Habsburg.The present portrait is an extremely rare engraving from this edition in excellent condition.
