The present painting is an important work by the Flemish painter Artus Wolfaerts. Having become a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1616/17, he established one of the town’s leading workshops. Wolfaerts painted religious subjects, including numerous altarpieces, as well as mythological scenes. In 1635 he contributed to the decoration of the ‘Pompa Introitus Ferdinandi’ in Antwerp.
