Born as the son of a factory owner in Vienna, Emil Jakob Schindler attended the Vienna Academy between 1860 and 1868. Strongly influenced by the works of the Barbizon School, which he saw at the Vienna Universal Exposition in 1873, he transformed his impressions into subtle and atmospherically sensitive landscape paintings which would become typical of Austrian Mood Impressionism.
