27 April 1842, Vienna (Austria) - 9 August 1892, Westerland, island of Sylt (Germany)

Emil Jakob Schindler was an Austrian painter and illustrator who achieved particular fame for his landscape depictions. He belongs undisputedly to the most prominent representatives of Austrian atmospheric painting.

Born 1842 the scion of an industrialist family, Schindler decided against a career in the military and instead enrolled at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Albert Zimmermann. Even as an undergraduate, he focused on the study of landscape painting, especially the Dutch genre. The artist Hans Makart was among his closest friends.
He travelled through Europe from 1873 to 1875, visiting Venice, Dalmatia and Holland.
Schindler produced a series of paintings depicting farmers’ gardens from 1878 onwards. They were characterised by a particular close-up perspective and faithfulness to detail. His portrayal of everyday scenes is reminiscent of his fellow artist Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. The influence of French Realism is clearly apparent.
Schindler married the singer Anna Bergen in 1878; their first-born daughter rose to prominence under the name Alma Mahler Werfel. Initially the young couple shared an apartment with the artist Julius Victor Berger.
The Schindler family spent its summers at Plankenberg Palace near Neulengbach from 1885. Carl Moll and Tina Blau were his students. Schindler received numerous accolades for his artistic oeuvre, among them the 1881 Reichel Artists’ Prize and the Gold Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1891. Schindler’s work was highly appreciated even during his lifetime, as evidenced by the commission awarded by Crown Prince Rudolf to illustrate the Austro-Hungarian Royal Family in word and image. For this purpose, Schindler travelled through Istria, Dalmatia and other regions.
Schindler succumbed to undiagnosed appendicitis 1892 on the island of Sylt. The sculptor Edmund Hellmer erected a marble monument in his honour, which now stands in the Vienna City Park.

Works by Emil Jakob Schindler have featured successfully at Dorotheum auctions for years. His 1890 painting entitled “View of Ragusa” was sold for €317,500 at an auction on 25 November 2009.
