Even the strong overpainting (especially the clothes of the two women) cannot lessen the expressive strength and outstanding decorative quality of this work. The format, which is similar to a frieze, lends itself to comparison with the composition Gathering of village women (95.3 x 179.7 cm), which was auctioned at Butterfield & Butterfield on 9 November 1993 (L 3664, referred to in error as Sergei Kolesnikoff).
