Andrea Figari *

Andrea Figari * - 19th Century Paintings

(Sassari 1858–1945 Genoa)
Two Coastal Views, both signed A. Figari, oil on panel, each 26.5 x 42.5 cm, framed, (2) (Rei)

Andrea Figari received his artistic training at the Academy in Genoa where he studied under Tammar Luxoro. As heir to the Scuola Grigia Genovese, itself influenced by French 19th century landscape painting, he endeavoured to paint en plein air. His favourite themes were drawn from his surroundings; the Ligurian coastline and sea, as well as the port of Genoa. His paintings were precise, smooth and delicate. As time passed, his style evolved and his work became more emotionally charged, particularly the marine views for which he was famous. After a short attempt at Divisionism, he adopted brushstrokes and a method of representing light more reminiscent of the French Impressionists.
During the “Feste Colombiane” of 1892 one of his paintings was bought by King Umberto II. Today his paintings can be viewed in the Museum of Modern Art in Genoa and in the Cairo Museum.
