The present lot is a lovely example of the Virgin Mary praying with crossed hands.
It can be compared to another version of the Madonna annunicata by Pelagio Pelagi which was part of the important collection belonging to Pietro Baldassarre Ferrero in Turin before finding its way to the collection held by the gallery of modern and contemporary art in Turin in 1986.
Both paintings derive from another painting by Pelagio Palagi, the Madonna with Child, painted circa 1825 for the parish church of Muggiò near Monza (Pelagio Palagi Pittore. Dipinti delle raccolte del Comune di Bolgona, exhibition catalogue, 1996, p. 44)
The present work was influenced by the Classicism of the great 17th century master, Guido Reni.
