Ugo Pendini - 19th Century Paintings

(Venice 1853–1895)
Portrait of the Artist’s Wife, signed Ugo Pendini, oil on canvas, 121 x 75 cm, framed, (GG)

Illustrated in:
Renzo Trevisan, Giacomo Favretto, 1849–1887, La Tipografia Scorzè, Venice 1999, Ed II, p. 250.

Ugo Pendini attended the Florence Academy of Fine Arts as a young man. He then studied briefly under Domenico Morelli (1826-1901) in Naples before returning to Florence, travelling to Rome and then finally to Venice. Here he settled, establishing his reputation as a leading figure amongst Venice’s community of artists.
He painted numerous portraits of his own family such as the present work depicting the artist’s wife. She is shown leaning on a marble plinth, dressed in a fashionable white dress which the artist renders in its fluid beauty. She wears a pearl drop earring and a bracelet. She holds a white rose in one hand and a basket of flowers in the other.
The artist offers a glimpse of trees and a blue sky in the background. Pendini also painted picturesque views of the Venetian lagoon which were very popular in England.
