Balthasar Wigand mainly painted old Viennese miniature vedutas in gouache and watercolour, in which he often included a particularly small but well characterised figure staffage. From the 1830es onwards he began to deal with historical subjects; he ran a workshop which specialised in painted views of Vienna and its surrounding.
