The present etching is a copy of a drawing by Ingres and shows a portrait of his friend and engraver Luigi Calamatta (1801–1869). The original drawing is preserved in the Musée Carnavelt, Paris. A drawing after the same portrait with an attribution to Luigi Calamatta was sold at Christie’s, London on July 8, 2009 (Lot 131).
