Elena Luksch-Makowsky, daughter of the famous Russian painter Constantin Makovsky, studied painting under Ilja Repin at the school run by Princess Tenisheva, and at the academy in St. Petersburg. She became the first female Secession member in 1900. She was a pupil of Ilja Repin together with the five figures portrayed here.
