Heinrich Hollpein was the son of the engraver Leopold Hollpein. He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna where he exhibited his portraits between 1834 and 1836. In 1842 he travelled to Russia and portrayed aristocrats and artists. In 1851 he went to Rome where he became president of the local association of German artists in 1853. That same year he travelled via Naples to Munich
