Today’s Ponale, converted into a road running alongside Lake Garda in 1846, shortly before the death of the artist Carl Friedrich Heinzmann, is a popular stretch for mountain bikers and hikers. Heinzmann trained as a landscape and porcelain painter and primarily painted idyllic landscapes, preferably of the Swiss or Tyrolean Alps. His work received wide recognition. He was unable to complete his Italian travels, dying of a lung infection
