Lot No. 163

Venetian school, um 1750

Venetian school, um 1750 - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

Venetian galley, pen and brown ink, on laid paper, 13 x 19 cm, browned, somewhat stained, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

In the first half of the 18th century Luca Carlevarijs (1665-1731) made a series of twenty drawings with studies of Venetian ships which are kept in the Correr Museum in Venice today. The studies served Carlevarijs for classification of all ships of the Venetian Republic and were a repertory for many of his landscape paintings (comp. Disegni antichi dal Museo Correr di Venezia, ed. by T. Pignatti, I, Venice 1980, pp. 96-98). The present drawing may derive from a Venetian follower of Carlevarijs stammen, who was strongly guided in style and character by Carlevarijs‘ studies.
