Angelo Campanella - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Rome 1746-1811) and Anton Raphael Mengs (Aussig 1728-Rome 1779) Venus and amorettes at a pond: a pair of wall decorations after Roman frescoes in the Negroni Villa, c. 1778, engravings on laid paper, hand coloured, each signed Eg. Ant. Raph. Mengs delin./ Aug. Campanella sculpsit in the plate, 56 x 64 cm, with broad margin along platemarks, mounted, unframed, (2), (Sch)In 1777 the ancient ruins of the so-called Villa Negroni were excavated near the baths of Diocletian. Anton Raphael Mengs and Anton von Maron made sketches and coloured drawings after the wall frescoes which Angelo Campanella used as models for a series of eight engravings.
