Pieter Casteels II was born in Antwerp to a family of artists, of which he would become the most prolific member. Following his arrival in England, he specialised in decorative arrangements of flowers, fruits and animals, with which after the death of Jakob Bogdany he assumed the leading role of the genre. Casteels enjoyed such a good reputation that in 1711 he was appointed Director of the Academy created by Godfrey Kneller. His elegant and decorative oeuvre noticeably displays the influence of Verbruggen and Jan van Huysum.
