Aureliano Milani

Aureliano Milani - Old Master Paintings

(Bologna 1675 - c. 1749)
Grand architecture with the adoration of the magi,
oil on canvas, 112 x 154 cm, framed

We are grateful to Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri, for confirming the present painting as a work by Aureliano Milanis. A certificate by Prof Sestieri is available.

Milani received his training from his uncle, Giulio Cesare Milani. After a brief sojourn with Lorenzo Pasinelli, he switched to the thriving workshop of Gennari. He worked both for the clergy and the aristocracy of Bologna and Rome. Thanks to Count Fava, who was among his earliest patrons, Milani studied the works of Carracci. Pater Bernardi, a further patron, commissioned him for the painting of the façade of the Convento dei Serviti.
In its composition and understated brownish colouration the present painting resembles the St Aloysius Gonzaga preserved at Kunsthistorisches Museum (inv. no. GG 1624) or the Martyrdom of a saint in San Giovanni e Paolo, Rome.
