Raphael Govertsz. Camphuysen was the nephew of painter Dirk Camphuysen. As a scion of a well-known family of painters he belongs to the most important representatives of landscape painting of the Golden Eeuw. He received his training from his uncle and Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp. The painter Aert van der Neer was his brother-in-law. Camphuysen owes his fame primarily to his river landscapes, characterised by brown tones when seen from a distance.
