(Milan 1848–1917 Verbano)
Resting by Lake Maggiore, twice signed ATominetti (ligature), one signature only partially visible, oil on canvas, 58.5 x 98 cm, framed, (GG)
Provenance:
European private collection.
Achille Tominetti embraced Divisionism in the late 1880s, under the influence of Vittore Grubicy.
The renowned art dealer Grubicy was impressed with Tominetti’s talent and became his mentor. From 1888 onwards, Tominetti exhibited in London and Milan together with Giovanni Segantini and Angelo Morbelli. He devoted extensive studies to nature and this greatly influenced his rendering of light and atmosphere. The artist began his studies at the Brera Academy but, due to financial straits, in 1872 he returned to his family in his home village of Miazzina on Lake Maggiore where the first lot (lot 159) was painted.
In the second lot (lot 162), the artist has succeeded in capturing the atmosphere of the countryside with great empathy and social realism. Tominetti dedicated himself to portraying traditional mountain life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
