Lot No. 138

Alexander von Bensa

(Vienna 1820–1902)
Empress Elisabeth in a Ceremonial Carriage, signed Bensa, oil on panel, 26 x 40 cm, framed, (Rei)

The golden carriage belonging to the Viennese court was probably built in 1735/1740 for Emperor Karl VI. (1685-1740) and adapted several times. It is the work of the Viennese artist Franz Xaver Wagenschön. The baroque imperial coach is constructed from lime wood, encased in sheet gold and Venetian glass. The paintings in the panels depict allegories of a sovereign’s virtues and probably refer to Karl’s daughter Empress Maria Theresia (1717-1780). The imperial coach was only used for important events, such as transporting the Empress Elisabeth to her coronation in Budapest in 1867, probably one of its last duties. Today the imperial coach can be viewed in the Wagenburg at Schönbrunn Palace.
