573rd Art Auction, Dorotheum Vienna, 13 September 1966, lot 143;
Viennese private collection;
Dorotheum Vienna, 2 June 2010, lot 279.

In 1889, the well-known Viennese landscape and architectural watercolourist Franz Kopallik undertook a study trip to Russia, at the behest of Franz I, Prince of Liechtenstein. His journey took him from Wiborg via St. Petersburg and on to Moscow. The present work is evidence of the extent to which this journey influenced his oeuvre. His patrons included not only the house of Liechtenstein but also Emperor Franz Joseph I, Archduke Karl Ludwig, and the Kings of Bulgaria and Romania. Kopallik was a member of the Viennese Künstlergenossenschaft and was shown at their 1892 exhibition (cf. Heinrich Fuchs, Die österreichischen Maler des 19. Jahrhunderts, Vienna, 1973, Vol. 2, p. K128).
