With his scenes of rural life Cesare Laurenti was one of the most successful Venetian painters at the turn of the 19th century. Thieme-Becker wrote of him, “Whilst retaining the realistic settings, around 1895 he steered away from genre painting into a symbolic and idealised direction…..” His works were exhibited throughout Europe.
