Jean François Portaels studied in Brussels under his father-in-law François-Joseph Navez, in Paris with Paul Delaroche and in Rome. He travelled through Egypt, Syria, Morocco, Spain, Hungary and Norway. From 1847 to 1850 he was Director of the Ghent Academy, and from 1863 to 1865 taught at the Brussels Academy. During the years from 1868 to 1870 he taught independently. From 1878 onwards he was the Director of the Brussels Academy. He often painted exotic scenes, particularly depicting oriental women, as well as biblical scenes and portraits of prominent people (Cf.
