Franz Richard Unterberger studied at the Munich Academy under Clemens von Zimmermann and Julius Lange. A study trip to Milan followed. In 1860 the artist moved to Düsseldorf where he met the brothers Oswald and Andreas Achenbach who would significantly influence his artistic endeavours. Unterberger also undertook extensive journeys throughout the north, to countries including Denmark and Norway, as well as to the English and Scottish coast. Inspired by several sojourns in Italy, in his later artistic career he increasingly turned to depicting the southern landscapes which define his œuvre.
