1968 Mercedes 220

1968 Mercedes 220 - Classic Cars

The Strich 8 saloon in an exceptional condition!

The colloquial term "Strich 8" originates from its official premiere year in 1968 and applies to both the W114 and W115 series. By December 1976 the Strich 8 had been built over 1.9 million times, and was the best-selling vehicle in Germany in 1974 according to vehicle registration statistics. The timeless body design with its clear lines without any fancy distractions originated from Paul Bracq. During the course of its career, the Strich 8 has shaped a whole new car generation thanks to its outstanding qualities. Its excellent reliability was renowned and in its diesel versions it became nothing less than a stalwart for taxi operators.

This 220 was delivered on July 28, 1968 by the Teissl Mercedes showroom in Villach. This 220 is a very early vehicle from the "0.5" series. The floor is still fitted with rather mundane rubber mats, it can at least be lit up by the optional sliding roof. The buyer was a senior official of the Villach Town Council, who passed it on to a second owner only in 1996, after more than 20 years. He in turn let go of it in the same year. Then it was mothballed for a few years before it found a new home in 2002 where it was given a comprehensive overhaul of the safety-relevant fittings, such as the brakes, the chassis and the lighting. The professional overhaul of the carburettor returned the engine to its original performance and the repainting of the bodywork in 2008 restored its old glow. Various service logbook entries and inspection reports lend credence to the indicated mileage. The only 4,000 kilometres covered in all of 13 years made it clear to the latest owner that time for the Mercedes had simply gone missing. He presented the car as recently serviced, with a new battery, and with the latest vehicle inspection sticker!
