Louis Auguste Mathieu Legrand *

Louis Auguste Mathieu Legrand * - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(France 1863-1951) Dancers at a ballet performance, pastel on paper, comprising three parts, 65,5 x 106 cm, framed, (Sch)

Louis Legrand studied with Félicien Rops at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon from 1884 onwards. He then worked as a graphic artist and created illustrations for magazines such as „Journée“, „Vie Parisienne“ and „Courrier Francais“. His main interest lay in the Parisian night life, in bars, dancing cafés and theaters.Besides his activity as an illustrator Legrand became also famous for his oil paintings and pastels which he executed with tender colors and in an Impressionist like manner. The present study is an excellent example for Legrand‘s technical skills in handling the pastel chalk and for the influence he gained from contemporaries such as Édgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose interest for ballet- and dance scenes he shared.
