Jacopo Vignali (Pratovecchio 1592 – 1664 Florence) - Old Master Paintings

Zerbino dying in the arms of Isabella, oil on canvas, 173 x 233 cm, framed

Provenance:
Christie’s auction Bologna, 9 June 1992 (lot 775).

A smaller variant of this painting was in the collection of the Galleria G. Zabert, Turin (G. Zabert, Dipinti, arazzi e sculture dal XIV al XIX secolo, lot 11, Turin 1989). The image is based on an episode taken from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso. Zerbino is killed in a battle by Mandricando and dies in the arms of his beloved Isabella. Jacopo Vignali departed from the influence of his master, Matteo Rosselli in the 1620s, developing his own style, characterised by dramatic lighting effects, lush colours and the depiction of powerful emotions, as is also evident in this painting.
