Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato 1609–1685 Rome)

Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato 1609–1685 Rome) - Old Master Paintings

Madonna with the Child sleeping, verso a label from the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt/ Main, oil on canvas, 49 x 40 cm, framed

Provenance:
formerly in the collection of the industrial magnate and German Reich foreign minister, Walter Rathenau (1867–1922);
until recently held by the Museum Schloss Freienwalde in Bad Freienwalde (Brandenburg);
private collection, Berlin.

We are grateful to M. Francois Macé de Lépinay for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of this picture.

This painting from the collection of Walter Rathenau is an extraordinary example of high quality and sensitive portrayals of the Madonna by Sassoferrato. The artist did not sign or date his work, with the result that it is not possible to order it chronologically. What is definite, according to Macé de Lépinay, is that this is a copy in the artist’s hand of one of his most famous compositions.
