An important Belgian private collection.
Van Bassen was predominantly an architectural painter who depicted church interiors marked by keenly observed perspectives drawing his inspiration from the work of father and son Van Steenwyck. The figures in his paintings were frequently added by Frans Francken II, Cornelis van Poelenburgh, Esaias van de Velde, and as in the present painting, Anthonie Palamedesz.
