The present painting relates to the work of the Emilian painter Francesco Primaticcio (1504-1570). These Putti can be compared with those painted in the friezes that Primaticcio produced in France for King Francis I, recorded by a drawing by the same artist preserved in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 8578), which depicts Putti playing with the letters of the word REX (see: Primaticcio. Un Bolognese alla corte di Francia, ed. by D. Cordellier/J. Bentini, exhibition catalogue, Milan 2005, pp. 166-167).
