A comparable painting (a view of the Église de Saint Sulpice in Paris) was sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, 18 October 2016, lot 261. Mathys Schoevaerdts was apprenticed to the landscapist Adriaen Frans Boudewyns in 1682. In 1690 he was appointed master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. His accurately studied landscapes are occasionally mistaken for those by Pieter Bout or Adriaen Frans Boudewyns.
