This painting is the work of a highly fascinating artist who was only recently rediscovered. Only little is known about Dubois’s life, which holds true for many French still life painters of the seventeenth century. In 1663 he was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris. A comparable still life, Corbeille de fruits et objets divers [Basket of Fruit and Various Objects], is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de La Rochelle. Dubois was clearly influenced by François Habert and Louis Moillon. The rediscovery of this painting is an important addition to his known oeuvre.
