Another version of this composition was sold at Bonham’s, London, 10 July 2002, lot 346. Artus Wolfaerts painted a series of apostles, all of which are inscribed and numbered on a cartouche (see H. Vlieghe, Zwischen van Veen und Rubens, Artus Wolffort, ein vergessener Antwerpener Maler, in: Wallraf-Richartz-Jahrbuch, IX, 1977, pp. 93–136).

We are grateful to Hans Vlieghe, who confirmed the attribution of this painting to Artus Wolfaerts on the basis of a high resolution photograph.
