Provenance:
Private collection, Vienna

In terms of typology and colouring, this painting is related to a depiction of St. Sebastian executed by Bijlert in 1624 and now preserved in the collection of the Counts von Harrach, Rohrau (Lower Austria). Another work by Jan Bijlert closely resembling the present composition, an Allegory of the Five Senses, was sold at Christie’s, Paris, on 22 June 2006 as lot 22.

We are grateful to Paul Huys Janssen, who confirmed the authenticity of the present painting on the basis of high-resolution photographs.
