Lot No. 95 #

Josef Anton Kapeller II

(Imst in the Tyrol 1761-1806 Einöd near Graz) Saint John receiving the cross from Jesus, brush and greyish-brown ink, over pen in black chalk, on handmade paper, 24.8 x 20 cm, browned, foxing, frayed margins, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Drawings by Josef Anton Kapeller II are very rare. Among the known sheets the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin (KdZ 26523) houses one with an allegorical representation in the same technique (Gaethgens, Manuth, Paul. Berlin 1987, p. 75 ff., Cat. 34). The fragment of the coat-of-arms of the Jesuit order at the right margin of the drawing is remarkable and may point to the Jesuit order as a possible patron.
