Jan van Bunnik, pupil of Herman Saftleven, specialised in large-format landscapes. They were evidence of the influence of Roman landscape painters. Walther Bernt writes of him, “His landscapes, unified by their blue-green tone, are recognisable in the mannered representation of the mountains...”. Bunnik, known in Rome by the bent name “Ketelroom” (kettledrum), was in the employ of the Duke of Modena between 1676 and 1684. The ducal coat-of-arms decorates the carts in the foreground of this painting.
