Lot No. 528

Jan van Huchtenburgh

(Haarlem 1647–1723 Amsterdam)
A mounted skirmish from one of Prince Eugen von Savoy’s campaigns, signed lower right, oil on canvas, 66 x 84 cm, framed,

Jan van Huchtenburgh’s enthusiasm for battle paintings can be attributed to his master, Adam Frans van der Meulen. Huchtenburgh accompanied Prince Eugen on his campaigns between 1708–1717 as a court painter, glorifying his victories in a comprehensive series of engravings and many paintings. A series of large-format works, today in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin, are among the most impressive. However, it was above all his medium-format works, such as the present picture, which enjoyed great popularity with his aristocratic clientele, such as, for instance, the reduced format versions of the Turin series in Schloss Pommersfelden. They contributed over a long period to the popularity of the victor over the Turks, with Huchtenburgh becoming a propagandist for the Prince. The present work is comparable with Huchtenburgh’s ‘Siege of Namur’ (long-term long of the Kunsthistorisches Museum to the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum, Vienna).
