Lot No. 471

Jan Asselijn

(Dieppe 1615–1652 Amsterdam)
A mounted skirmish, signed and dated, Jan Asslein 1635, oil on canvas, 66 x 88 cm, framed,

Jan Asselijn, who originated in Northern France, undertook his training with Esaias van de Velde in Antwerp. The natural and topographical surroundings take second place to the battle scene. At the time of the Dutch Wars of Independence, Asselijn placed the viewer in the position of an eyewitness. Our painting, which is comparable with a work by Asselijn in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, is one of few battle scenes within the artist’s oeuvre, who otherwise is known for his depictions of the landscape in Campagna, produced later in Italy. This early work already bears witness to the mastery of the young Asselijn, who with every justification, is seen as one of the most important landscape painters of the 1st half of the 17th century.
