Pjotr Ivanovitch Balashov


(St. Petersburg 1835–1888) Russian Dragoon at the time of Tsar Alexander II., signed in Cyrillic script and dated 1873, watercolour on paper, 39 x 33 cm, Passepartout, framed, (GS)

Provenance: Private German property, The representation of officers and everyday life in the Russian army was an important theme in the works of the portrait and landscape painter Balashov, a former student of S. Vorobjev. In his later years he was graphic artist to the commissariat of the military authorities. This composition was typical for Balashov and portrays an imperial dragoon in the uniform of the time of Tsar Alexander ll. A counterpart to this painting was auctioned at the Dorotheum on 20.04.2010. We are grateful to Dr Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her assistance in cataloguing this work.
