Jaroslav Vesin The artist was born in the Czech Republic but worked mainly in Bulgaria. He studied first at the Prague Academy before moving to Munich in 1881 where he graduated in 1883. After his studies he worked in Munich and in Slovakia. His main subject matter during this period was Slovak village life. In 1897 he moved to Bulgaria where he settled and was appointed Professor of the National Academy of Art in Sofia in 1904. Although known for his realistic portrayals of war in the Balkans (1912) , he also painted scenes depicting the travails and joys of contemporary Slovak and Bulgarian village life throughout his artistic career. Many of his works can be found today in the Sofia Museum.
